“Gathering”

An Exhibition by Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu

June 5–7, 2025

About the Exhibition

Gathering is a sacred invitation—a return to the self through stillness, surrender, and inner knowing. In her debut exhibition, artist-curator Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu weaves together poetry, sculpture, movement, and ancestral memory to explore a spiritual shift: from controlling outcomes to listening deeply and letting life unfold.

The show’s title speaks to many things—spiritual gatherings, gathering oneself, gathering memories across lifetimes. Each work is a portal, offering viewers space to reflect, release, and remember.

This exhibition is a collaborative ritual, featuring original works from several Black women artists whose practices span painting, dance, sculpture, and installation. Together, these offerings create a resonant environment of beauty, vulnerability, and power.

Meet the Artist-Curator

Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu is a poet, essayist, and award-winning media executive devoted to creating equity in the arts. As a Purposeful Lady of Leisure™, her work centers rest, remembrance, and intuitive living. Gathering reflects her transition from striving to surrender—an exploration of what it means to honor the whole self and walk a path guided by soul.

Collaborating Artists

Paris Souffrant – Crescent Moon, The Decision

A Brooklyn-based painter blending oil and embroidery, Paris channels her Haitian and Jamaican lineage into richly textured works. Her painting evokes an ancient memory—Shaw-Omachonu cradled in a crescent moon, facing the decision to return to Earth with purpose. It honors the magnetic pull of destiny.

Friday Lynton – The Armor of Faith 001; an Ode to Saint Francis

A Guyanese-American metal artisan, Friday crafts objects that hold both spirit and steel. Her wearable sculpture—a metal cape—symbolizes surrender. The piece releases the burdens and embraces the beauty Black women carry as they shape the world. Viewers are invited to wear the cape and experience the sacred act of release.

Rahila Coats – WOMAN, WOLF

A dancer and choreographer, Rahila uses movement to restore intuitive connection. She is featured in this short film directed by and also starring Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu. Their performance is inspired by Women Who Run With the Wolves, awakening the wild feminine and reclaiming instinct. The work is a cinematic return to the untamed self.

Jocelyn Girigorie – SEATED, HIGH THRONE

A lighting and set designer rooted in spatial storytelling, Jocelyn created a sculptural throne that links the sitter to both cosmos and Earth. Rooted in Taylor’s reiki practice, it invites each visitor to take a seat—to align, to listen, and to rise attuned to their own divine rhythm.

Poetry Installations (poems by Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu)

GATHERING

A murmured memory, circling time, calling the soul back to its center.

This opening poem sets the tone for the show—a meditation on forgetting, remembering, and the hope of rest after spiritual labor.

REBIRTH AS A BEND

A soft rupture in the veil—where fear dissolves and the earth begins to speak.

This poetic offering invites surrender, reminding us that the answers often arrive when we bend, not break.

How to Engage

You are invited to:

● Take a seat in the throne

● Wear the metal cape, if moved

● Read the poetry aloud, softly or in silence

● Let your body respond

● Let something go

Thank you for entering this space. May Gathering meet you exactly where you are—and leave you a little more whole.
