Hangeul, Writing Person

The second New York solo exhibition by Korean Hangeul calligraphy artist YJ Choe / Shiyool.

May 21–25, 2026, 12–8pm Live Performance: May 22–24

“Hangeul, Writing Person” presents the evolving calligraphic practice of YJ Choe, known artistically as Shiyool. Centered on Hangeul—the Korean alphabet—the exhibition explores writing as a visual, physical, and meditative act. Through brush, ink, composition, and performance, Shiyool transforms written language into a field of movement, emotion, and form.

For this exhibition, the artist completes works in real time throughout the run of the show, allowing visitors to witness the process as an essential part of the exhibition itself. As the days progress, the gallery gradually shifts: marks accumulate, compositions resolve, and the number of finished works increases. The result is an exhibition that unfolds in time, inviting viewers to return, observe, and experience the living rhythm of Hangeul as it moves from gesture to artwork.

Rooted in traditional Korean Seoye and expanded through a contemporary sensibility, Shiyool’s practice honors the structure and spirit of Hangeul while opening it to personal interpretation. Hangeul, Writing Person is both an exhibition and a performance of presence: a space where language becomes image, and writing becomes a way of being.
